    CFB power rankings:
    1. Georgia Bulldogs: When your leading rusher is a receiver with one 70-yard carry, it probably wasn’t a good night for your ground game. And when your QB throws two interceptions, it was likely a long day for the offense as a whole. But that didn’t matter for Georgia against Mississippi State. The defense held the Bulldogs to one offensive touchdown in their 45-19 victory. The other score came off a 63-yard punt return on the last play of the first half. Even without the offense humming, Georgia is the No. 1 team in the nation.
    2. Ohio State Buckeyes: Ohio State beating a 3-6 opponent by 42 isn’t all that impressive. But that catch from Marvin Harrison Jr.? Beyond impressive. C.J. Stroud threw five touchdowns. Miyan Williams took 15 carries for 147 yards and a score. And yet, Harrison’s catch was still the biggest takeaway from the Buckeyes’ victory over Indiana. He’s the WR1 whatever year her declares for the draft.
    3. Michigan Wolverines: Michigan had 148 passing yards vs. Nebraska, their second-lowest output of the season. Yet, somehow, that was still two more yards than the Cornhuskers had of total offense. The Wolverines’ defense is one of the best in the country, and running back Blake Corum is the offense. Can J.J. McCarthy and the passing attack keep pace with the Ohio States of the world? We’ll have an answer in a couple of weeks.
    4. TCU Horned Frogs: The final score of 17-10 leads one to believe TCU vs. Texas was a close game. In reality, the Longhorns never held a lead at any point. And although the Horned Frogs scored their fewest points of the season, Texas didn’t have more than 3 until less than five minutes were remaining. Kendre Miller is lighting the country on fire, as he has rushed for a TD in every game this season and recorded 100+ yards in seven of his last eight. Sonny Dykes’ squad is rolling, and only Baylor and Iowa State stand in their way before the Big 12 Championship.
    5. Tennessee Volunteers: It didn’t take long for Tennessee to rebound from their humbling loss to Georgia last week. The Vols returned to their incendiary form on offense, torching an underrated Missouri defense for 66 points and 724 total yards. Hendon Hooker and Jalin Hyatt remain one of the top QB/WR duos in the NCAA.

    NFL power rankings:
    1. Eagles (1): Yes, the offense has struggled the past two weeks. But a defense that now ranks second in the league got a nice boost from the recent additions of DTs Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh. The veterans combined to share a sack Sunday in their Philly debuts while helping to hold Indianapolis' reputable ground game in check.
    2. Bills (3): Has a team ever played a home and away game ... in the same building ... in a city it's not based in ... in a five-day span? We doubt it but expect Buffalo might soon consider Detroit's Ford Field its vacation house.
    3. Chiefs (4): The NFL's top-ranked offense continues its fascinating evolution. Travis Kelce's 33rd career game with at least 100 receiving yards is a new league record for tight ends, breaking Rob Gronkowski's mark. Meanwhile, rookie RB Isiah Pacheco also hit the century mark on the ground for the first time Sunday, churning out yards with his signature hard-running style.
    4. Cowboys (6): They've got the NFL's best pass rusher (LB Micah Parsons), top RB duo (Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard) and might soon add WR Odell Beckham Jr. What was already a really good team could be one of the few elevating its potential with postseason drawing closer – as evidenced by Dallas' most dominant road win in franchise history Sunday in Minnesota against a team that had sported the league's best record.
    5. Dolphins (5): First-place Miami comes out of its bye week ... to start another bye week with the Texans coming to town. Then things get real on season-long three-game roadie to visit the 49ers, Chargers and Bills.

    NHL power rankings:
    1. Boston Bruins: Hampus Lindholm is a revelation. He held the fort on Boston's back end until Charlie McAvoy returned, and helped get the Bruins off to a franchise-best start. Yes, David Pastrnak is great too, but Lindholm elevated his game to dynamic new heights while averaging over a point-per-game, earning a plus-18 rating and generally dominating every shift.
    2. New Jersey Devils: Nico Hischier is on a mission; the Devils' captain has developed into a two-way force. Hischier's work ethic combined with talent (17 points in 15 games) and leadership acumen make him a true triple threat. As New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff noted, this is the best version of Hischier so far, and he should be in the conversation for the Selke Trophy.
    3. Vegas Golden Knights: Logan Thompson is a fortress in net. It's tough to get a puck by him. The Golden Knights' goaltending was a question mark until Thompson answered the bell with confidence. Vegas reaps the rewards of that stability everywhere else, and the team's standout scoring depth (led by Jack Eichel, Chandler Stephenson, et al) and solid back end provide Thompson with great support to be at his best.
    4. Carolina Hurricanes: Andrei Svechnikov gives life to Carolina's offense. He's been humming along this season with impressive output right alongside ride-or-die, top-line teammate Sebastian Aho. So, who's the real MVP? Like the NHL in 2004, we'll allow for a tie here. Svechnikov and Aho work seamlessly together and apart. Carolina is lucky to have them both firing.
    5. Winnipeg Jets: Connor Hellebuyck is back on top. The goalie appeared fully recovered from last season's downturn with an accomplished start, collecting two shutouts in 11 games and sterling stats, too. Hellebuyck's resurgence has propelled Winnipeg to unexpectedly strong results early on. Good for the Jets, and good for Hellebuyck in a contract year.

    NBA power rankings:
    1. Celtics (13-4, Last week No.1): Boston has to be thankful for coach Joe Mazzulla, who has struck just the right tone with this team after being thrust into the head coaching position days before training camp. He didn’t try to reinvent the wheel, trusted what had been built and what these players had worked on, and struck the right tone. The Celtics are now home for six straight with some interesting tests: Luka Doncic and the Mavericks (Wednesday) and the red-hot Kings on Friday.
    2. Bucks (12-4, LW 2): Milwaukee has to be thankful for the return of peak Brook Lopez, who leads the NBA in total blocks (44) and blocks per game (2.8), and who has played at a Defensive Player of the Year level. He is the reason they have the second-best defense in the NBA. Giannis Antetokounmpo is averaging 30.1 points, 11.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists a game, but some people don’t see him as a top-five MVP candidate so far because his two-point shooting has fallen to 57% this season. Really?
    3. Suns (11-6, LW 4): Phoenix fans should be thankful Devin Booker is their anchor. This team has gone 4-3 without starters Chris Paul and Cameron Johnson because Booker has been phenomenal this season, averaging 27.6 points a game, shooting 38% from 3, and dishing out 5.8 assists daily. Cameron Payne also deserves credit for stepping up with CP3 nursing a sore heal. The Suns get the two upstart teams in the West, the Jazz and Kings, in some interesting tests this week.
    4. Cavaliers (11-6, LW 6): Be thankful for a front office with Koby Altman (and an owner) willing to go all in on Donovan Mitchell because it has worked out (29.8 points and 6 assists a game). He has been better than advertised, and with Darius Garland (23.9 points and 7.8 assists), the Cavs may have the best backcourt in the league. The one thing that would keep them from that crown is Garland’s turnovers. A couple of good tests to see where this team really stands in the East coming up with games in Milwaukee and Toronto.
    5. Jazz (12-7, LW 10): A little wind has come out of the sails as the Jazz have dropped 4-of-6 but Jazz fans have to be thankful that Lauri Markkanen has found himself and been maybe the biggest surprise in the NBA this season. He’s averaging 22.4 points and 8.5 rebounds a game, shooting 36.1% on 3-pointers, and he looks like the hometown All-Star in Salt Lake City. It’s not the offense that has been the issue of late, it’s the 28th-ranked defense over the last six games. Will Hardy has to come up with a way to get some stops for this team.

    CBA power rankings:
    1. North Carolina (1): North Carolina is off to a 4-0 start after Armando Bacot dropped 19 and had a career-best 23 rebounds in a win over CAA title contender James Madison.
    2. Houston (2): The Cougars have an absolute star in freshman Jarace Walker. The win at Oregon should send another strong message that the Cougars are for real.
    3. Kansas (5): The Jayhawks beat Duke in the Champions Classic and have the next-in-line Big 12 player of the year candidate in Jalen Wilson.
    4. Indiana (6): The Hoosiers passed their first major test with a road win at Xavier in the Gavitt Games.
    5. Texas (11): The Longhorns throttled Gonzaga in Austin behind Tyrese Hunter, who could end up being one of the best transfers after coming from Iowa State.
